Reservoir Clean-up
Lake Decatur, in Illinois, was the sole source of drinking water for the city of Decatur. The disposal area was 2 miles from the lake with an 80-foot dredge lift. Homes were located along the shoreline of the lake, and the purity of drinking water had to be maintained during the dredging. To meet these requirements, Southwind:
laid 11,000 feet of 18 HDPE pipe, with watertight fused joints, through a pristine wooded area and across two ditches and country roads. |
dredged bottom sediment with a state-of-the-art hydraulic dredge. |
controlled turbidity with variable speed cutter head and protective shield. |
cycled slurry through a system of internal separation dikes to meet an effluent requirement of 15 ppm. |
dredged over 2 million cubic yards to a spoil area two miles away. |
Result -- improved water quality in the lake during the dredging process, and met or exceeded NPDES requirements and the expectations of all project participants.
